A couple of months ago Joey Rudd Photography entered some photos into Shoot & Share's Photo Contest, an international photo contest that had over 250,000 photos entered from across the globe. With odds like that you don't particularly expect to win much, so I didn't get my hopes up.
Once all of the voting was complete and the results were in we were able to see how our photos fared. We were delighted to hear that one of our photos placed in the top 100 (82nd) of its category and another was a finalist! We also had 4 photos that placed in the top 10% of their categories and 5 in the top 20%! We were pleased with how our photos ranked in this prestigious contest.

This one was taken at Major's Hill Park in Ottawa this past September (Here is their full wedding). This shot was similar to another award winning photograph we had from this same wedding. The other image won us the platinum award for most unique wedding photo at the Ottawa Wedding Awards. You can see a post about that photo here. The photo is below. It was a multiple exposure photograph of the couple from this same location.
Speaking of multiple exposures, we noticed that several of our highest ranked photos were, in fact, double exposure photographs. These are created when you take two (or more) photos on top of each other to create the effect that was better known to film photographers.
I have always loved the look of double exposures and for the last few years have been trying to incorporate them into the final product that we give our couples. For a while they were not seen much in the wedding industry, and more only in fringe art communities, but over the last few years we have noticed a rise in their popularity. Our couples love them, they are inevitably the page stopper in our albums, and, apparently, they fare well in contests as well!
For example, this photo was a finalist in the wedding party category of the Shoot & Share Photo Contest.

They can be awesome for family photos as well. Here is one we just did a couple of weeks ago.
One of our wedding couples got married the weekend before we started taking these images. When they saw us post some, they loved the style. Although we always create these photos directly in the camera on site, we decided to attempt creating a similar effect with one of their wedding photos in post processing. We were excited to send this to them as an anniversary surprise gift today. Here is the resulting photograph.
I enjoy the artistic gamble that the double exposure creates. Keep loving these everyone and I will keep creating them!
